He later directed the film Fly Away Home (1996), which was nominated for an Academy Award for best cinematography. His most recent film is Duma (2005), about a young South African boy's friendship with an orphaned cheetah. Ballard's films often deal with man and his relation to nature and have a strong poetic streak. They are often subtle and understated in their execution. Possibly because of this, his work, though critically-praised, has not found a huge mainstrean audience. However, he remains a widely-admired director with an almost cult following. Many consider his Never Cry Wolf to be one of the greatest (and most underrated) films of the 1980s. Fly Away Home is a 1996 movie about the daughter (Anna Paquin) of a divorced man (Jeff Daniels) who, with her father, leads a flock of geese from Canada to a wildlife refuge in the US.
