Carthage is a town located in Franklin County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 520.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 86.2 km² (33.3 mi²). 85.9 km² (33.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 520 people, 198 households, and 144 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.1/km² (15.7/mi²). There are 291 housing units at an average density of 3.4/km² (8.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.31% White, 0.38% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
