Cass County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 27,150. Its county seat is Walker6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,253 km˛ (2,414 mi˛). 5,226 km˛ (2,018 mi˛) of it is land and 1,027 km˛ (397 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 16.43% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,150 people, 10,893 households, and 7,734 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km˛ (14/mi˛). There are 21,286 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (11/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 86.52% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 11.45% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,893 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 6.10% from 18 to 24, 23.00% from 25 to 44, 27.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 101.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $34,332, and the median income for a family is $40,156. Males have a median income of $30,097 versus $21,232 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,189. 13.60% of the population and 9.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.20% of those under the age of 18 and 13.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
