In 1992, CassamUteem became the first Muslim President of Mauritius, and was reappointed to a second term in office.
Uteem was the very symbol of humility and dignity.
President Uteem believes that the Republic of Mauritius can only grow and prosper by accepting the fact of cultural diversity, and that Mauritians in general and Muslims in particular can only progress by learning about their differences as well as by reinforcing the values that they share in common.
Mr Uteem was nominated to his first formal leadership position in politics in 1969 when he was elected at the Municipal Elections to serve as Councillor of the City of Port Louis.
In 1976 CassamUteem was elected Member of the Mauritian Parliament and was successively re-elected in 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1991.
CassamUteem was awarded the insignia of Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK), the highest distinction of the land.
