Cassville is a city located in Barry County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,890. It is the county seat of Barry County6.


Geography

Cassville is located at 36°40'48" North, 93°52'10" West (36.680115, _93.869424)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,890 people, 1,194 households, and 770 families residing in the city. The population density is 404.3/km² (1,046.0/mi²). There are 1,307 housing units at an average density of 182.8/km² (473.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.30% White, 0.03% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 2.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,194 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.95.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,351, and the median income for a family is $34,074. Males have a median income of $22,952 versus $19,120 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,660. 15.4% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.4% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Cassville residents donated $10,000 toward the $50,000 goal to help keep the county seat in Cassville; Moneta had hoped to secure the site.
