Cast Of Thousands is the second album by the band Elbow, released in 2003 by V2 Records. The album title refers to the song "Grace Under Pressure", whose refrain was recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 2002, as sung by the audience during the band's set. Participants were then invited to register their names at the Elbow website, with all respondees gaining a 'credit' on the album sleeve. The US version of the album contains two additional songs: "Whisper Grass" (which was a B-side to first single "Fallen Angel") and "Lay Down Your Cross" (a B-side to third single "Not A Job"). The Japanese version includes "Whisper Grass" and "Brave New Shave" (another "Fallen Angel" B-side) as bonus tracks. A companion film was also produced in conjunction with the album's release. It features footage set to all 11 tracks on the album as well as the music videos for "Fallen Angel" and "Fugitive Motel." In the UK the film was released on DVD, whereas in the US it was released as an enhanced video bonus disc with the album. Elbow: Cast Of Thousands (2004): Reviews (692 words)
Cast of Thousands is a great record, beautiful and emotionally powerful as well as musically inventive...
Cast of Thousands rides the borders of sentimentality expertly-- Elbow's new-found hope in unity may seem like idealistic drivel on paper, but is carried off on record with refreshing determination.
Cast of Thousands is populated by a motley crew of fringe-dwellers, outsiders and no-accounts, looking for a warm place to drink and like-minded company to occupy the waking hours -- and Guy Garvey is the right man to tell their tales.
Elbow - Cast of Thousands (Album Review) (315 words)
Cast of Thousands, Elbow’s sophomore effort, begins with a series of electronic blips, which causes one to take pause and wonder if the band is another in an endlessly expanding line of Radiohead imitators.
Granted, Cast of Thousands might not have evolved in quite the same way had Radiohead not unleashed upon the world the strange, freak-out mayhem of Kid A and Amnesiac, but Elbow’s soaring art-rock gambits do more than simply follow in Thom Yorke’s footsteps.
It’s enough to consider Cast of Thousands to be a minor masterpiece and to declare that Elbow is definitely a band worth watching.
