It is situated in the province of Reggio Emilia in the Apennines mountains. The Province of Reggio Emilia is one of the eight provinces of the Italian Region of Emilia-Romagna. ... This is about the terrestrial mountain range. ...

The population of Castelnovo Monti is 10,053.

Castelnovo is best known for the "Pietra di Bismantova", a geological landmark in the Apennines. The pietra (literally "Rock of Bismantova") can be spotted from a distance of 30km as it stands at around 1.047m above sea level. The rock is a favourite climbing and ab-sailing destination throughout Italy and is considered a particularly difficult climb due to its outward-curving wall.

The rock has been mentioned by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri in one of his many verses dedicated to the Emilian Apennines along with parmisan cheese.

Castelnovo is an ideal holiday location for people looking to enjoy the "traditional" aspect of Italy. Along with every other town and village in the Apennines, Castelnovo is an approved area for the production of parmisan cheese. All the specialities of Emilian cuisine and its wines can be enjoyed in Castelnovo along with every aspect of traditional Emilian culture.
