Castle Hayne is a census-designated place located in New Hanover County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,116.


Geography

Castle Hayne is located at 34°21'23" North, 77°53'57" West (34.356353, _77.899126)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.9 km˛ (2.3 mi˛). 5.8 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.32% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,116 people, 437 households, and 312 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 191.5/km˛ (495.9/mi˛). There are 471 housing units at an average density of 80.8/km˛ (209.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 81.54% White, 14.78% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 437 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $34,531, and the median income for a family is $42,417. Males have a median income of $38,375 versus $25,040 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $17,172. 6.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
