Castle Oliver, also known as Clonodfoy, is a spectacular castle in the south part of County Limerick, Ireland. Built in 1845 by Elizabeth and Isabella Oliver Gascoigne, and designed by George Fowler Jones in the Scottish Baronial style, it survived intact until the early 1980s, when it stood empty for a number of years. In 1989 it was purchased by the late Damian Haughton, who put a halt to most of the worst leaks in the roof. In 1998 it was purchased by Nicholas Browne, who continued the restoration work, and transformed it back into a habitable residence. In 2006 it passed to Declan Cormack, the present owner, who is continuing the restoration. The castle contains about 110 rooms, and allegedly the largest private wine cellars in Ireland. Built of a local pink sandstone, it replaced the former Castle Oliver, which stood a thousand yards to the south-west. The lands were settled by Capt Robert Oliver, a Cromwellian soldier in about 1658. His descendant Richard Oliver married a Yorkshire heiress through whom he inherited substantial wealth. Their daughters, Isabella and Elizabeth Oliver Gascoigne, built the castle. Oliver! Oliver, see Oliver (William Oliver Swofford). ...
