'Castledermot (Diseart Diarmad in Irish), meaning "Dermot's Hermitage") is an inland town in the south-east of Ireland in County Kildare, about 75km from Dublin, and 10km from the town of Carlow. The River Lerr (a tributary of the larger River Barrow, the second longest river in Ireland) flows through the town. The town numbers about 1500 people, but the population is growing rapidly (January 2006) due to massive development. There are two schools in the town, the national school, and Colaiste Lorcain, both of which are located on the main street. Victor Flood and Joan Gannon (Joan is a scientist) are from Castledermot. More to the point, the area can boast Cathal Moore as a frequent visitor. Also educated at Colaiste Lorcain, the world famous concert promoter and shamrock grower, David Delaney. At least fifty percent of the public houses in the village depend on these visits for survival. David Tomlinson -the world famous rare artefact collector- (who baosts the largest intact pane of glass in Western Europe as part of his extentive window collection) is also known to have attended school in castledermot, that's whats somebody told me anyway. |
