After three decades of wealth, the town lost its proeminence in the 1970s and 1980s. The economic crisis and the changes due to the modernisation of the industries provoked high unemployment rates and depreciation of salaries, reducing the town's wealth. In 2003 the town became unfortunately famous throughout the country in the aftermath of an ecological accident caused by the spilling of chemical waste that affected the brook Cágado and the rivers Pomba and Paraíba do Sul, threatening the water supply of more than 20,000,000 Brazilians (including the city of Rio de Janeiro). Climate
Cataguases experiences a humid tropical climate (though there is clearly a dry season from May to August). There isn't much difference between temperature averages in the town, but during the dry season (winter), the weather tends to be milder. Cold days are extremely rare, and an example of that is that the dry season of 2007 was very hot, with temperatures even going up to 35°C (95°F) according to the thermometer in Ruy Barbosa Square (in the downtown) and relatively drier than usual. Naples beach in Florida lined with coconut trees is an example of a tropical climate. ...
