Species of the genus Catasetum occur from Mexico to tropical America, with the majority in Brazil.

The inflorescence is borne on the basis. It consists of very fleshy flowers that are unisexual, which is exceptional for orchids. The colorful male and yellowish-green female flowers are typically situated on different plants. Which type of flower a plant produces is determined by the conditions under which it grows. There are rare cases in which a single plant in intermediate conditions will produce both male and female flowers. These flowers are markedly different in size and color. At first, taxonomists even thought they were dealing with different species. The male flowers have a remarkable technique for the ejection of the pollinia. East Everglades Orchids Society (969 words)
The proper culture of Catasetums requires recognition of two distinct growth phases: 1, Active growth, which culminates with the onset of dormancy, as manifested by the withering and loss of foliage; 2, Dormancy, which lasts 6-12 weeks and culminates with the onset of new growth.
During active growth, the principal danger to Catasetums is damage by snails and insects, particularly spider mites.
Catasetums tolerate a wide light range, from Vanda light to Cattleya light; they may be watered freely during active growth, but water must be rigorously curtailed as dormancy approaches.
CULTURE OF CATASETINAE (1163 words)
Catasetums will do well in a variety of potting media so long as they are fertilized and watered regularly.
Catasetums are heavy feeders and for optimum growth and flowering they should be fertilized weekly with whatever fertilizer you use for your other plants following package directions.
Catasetums are prone to attacks by spider mites.
