Etymology

The etymology of the name "Cathays" is uncertain. A suggested etymology is 'stronghold within the enclosure' from Old Welsh cadeir 'battle, stronghold)' and Old English (ge)hæg 'enclosure'. Old Welsh (Hen Gymraeg) is the label attached to the Welsh language from the time it developed from the Brythonic language, generally thought to be in the period between the middle of the 6th century and the middle of the 7th century, until the early 12th century when it developed... Old English redirects here. ...

It is believed that "Cathays" seems to derive from the old Welsh for "battlefield"; although no evidence of any battle is known on the site, the name is fairly old and may be pre-Roman in origin. Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew from a small agricultural community founded on the Italian Peninsula circa the 9th century BC to a massive empire straddling the Mediterranean Sea. ...

Many of the roads in the area are named after farms that existed there before urbanisation, Allensbank and Wedal are two examples.

One of these roads, Coburn Street, is renowned for it's rat infestations, damp problems, and has been voted by local people as similar to third world countries such as Ethopia. Many Eastern European families have vowed to flee back to their country after suffering appalling conditions at the hands of one infamous letting agency which dominates the Cathays area and particularly targets young students as well as the large number of immigrants that reside there. It has been rumoured that the large influx of rats had caused an outbreak of the bubonic plague amongst a small house of students, which was particularly prevalent during the fourteenth century but has been thought to be extinct ever since. It was whispered that the disease was swiftly supressed and officials covered up the scandal before it could be made public. However, there is no tangible evidence to date to support this theory.
