Cathedral City is a city located in Riverside County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 42,647. Sandwiched between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, it is one of the cities in the Palm Springs area of southern California, .


The town's name derives from "Cathedral Canyon" to the south of the town, so named in 1850 by Henry Washington because its rock formations were reminiscent of a cathedral. The city itself started as a housing subdivision in 1925, but was not incorporated until 1981.

Geography

Cathedral City is located at 33 48'28" North, 116 27'53" West (33.807761, -116.464731)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 50.4 km (19.5 mi ). 49.7 km (19.2 mi ) of it is land and 0.7 km (0.3 mi ) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 42,647 people, 14,027 households, and 9,622 families residing in the city. The population density is 858.5/km (2,224.0/mi ). There are 17,893 housing units at an average density of 360.2/km (933.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the city is 65.29% White, 2.74% Black or African American, 1.03% Native American, 3.69% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 23.06% from other races, and 4.11% from two or more races. 49.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 14,027 households out of which 39.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 23.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.63.


In the city the population is spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $38,887, and the median income for a family is $42,461. Males have a median income of $29,598 versus $25,289 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,215. 13.6% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
