Style and Architecture
The building is from the baroque style from the it's last peryod. It is the most beautiful example of this style in all the nort of Mexico, and it's a very unique example because it involves the use of some columns like the salominic that were not very used at that time, it also uses the purist style. Cathedral during lightday It has an octagonal window in it's front brought from Germany and its considered as one of the best all in Mexico. It's main body is composed by three main boats divided by a serie of monumental columns, in it's front it's displayed a collection of twelve monuments celebrating the twelve original apostles, a clock in the up part and finally crowned with an angel that was added durying XIXth century. In it's basement there's the Sacred Art museum that displays a collection of pieces from the Colonial age.
History Originally in the place where the cathedral resides now, there was a primitive chapel that was built by TrasviƱa y Retes one of the first spanish that inhabited the village. The first stone was put in June 21st 1725 by the bishop of Durango Benito Crespo y Monroy (It must be considered that in those times Chihuahua depended religiously from Durango). The cathedral was finished until 1826 when the last tower was finished and the bells where brought. It was slightly damaged durying the french invasion in 1866. In 1910 with the conmemoration of the century of the independence of Mexio, the cathedral was decored with a large amount of lights. It was until 2005 when the cathedral was lighted again, but now with a permanent caracther.-1...
