Bishop Bottemanne started the planning for building a new cathedral in 1893. Pierre Cuypers made the first design of the church, but his son, Joseph Cuypers, became the architect.
Construction started in 1895 and on April 1, 1898 the cathedral was opened. In the years 1902 - 1906 construction continued.
Due to shortage of money the construction of the towers was prosponed until 1927.

The SaintBavoCathedral (also known as Sint-Baafs Cathedral, or the Dutch Sint Baafskathedraal) is the seat of the diocese of Ghent.
The building is based upon the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, a primarily wooden construction; it was consecrated in 942 by Transmarus, Bishop of Tournai and Noyon.
The cathedral is noted for the Ghent Altarpiece in its Joost Vijd chapel.
