The cathedral was built by the Spanish in 1462 on the site of Gibraltar's old mosque, which was much larger than the current building. The Cathedral's small courtyard is the remnant of the larger Moorish court of the mosque. The building was severely damaged during the Great Siege and when it was reconstructed in 1810 the opportunity was taken to widen Main Street. The tower was added in 1820 and in 1931 the cathedral was restored and the current west facade was erected to replace the poorer one built in 1810.
