A golden cat is a medium-sized wild cat belonging to either the genus Catopuma or Profelis. There are three species of golden cats:

Golden cats inhabit rainforests and hunt on the ground. Their fur color is normally reddish brown or golden brown, although there are several color variants. According to recent studies the African species is not closely related to the two Asian species; the similarity appears to be a result of convergent evolution.

At least three of the specimens were collected along rivers, but it is unknown whether this reflects a habitat preference or the collector's most effective method of transport in the difficult Bornean terrain.
It has always been questioned whether the bay cat is a unique species or merely a smaller island form of the Asian golden cat Catopuma temminkii.
With blood samples taken from the 1992 specimen, genetic testing has confirmed that they are indeed a unique species, and therefore a highly endangered one.
