The city was mentioned first in 998 AD, and was later a fief of the Colonna family. In 1482 it was besiged by Pope Sixts IV and obliged to surrender. It is especially known for the Treaty of Cave, signed on September 12, 1557 by plenipotentiaries of Pope Paulus IV and Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the Spanish viceroy of Naples. The Colonna family was a powerful noble family in medieval and renaissance Rome, supplying one pope and many other leaders, and fighting with their rivals the Orsini family for influence. ...
