Cavendish is a town located in Windsor County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,470.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 102.8 km˛ (39.7 mi˛). 102.7 km˛ (39.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,470 people, 617 households, and 420 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.3/km˛ (37.1/mi˛). There are 860 housing units at an average density of 8.4/km˛ (21.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.82% White, 0.07% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 617 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.80.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,727, and the median income for a family is $41,591. Males have a median income of $30,223 versus $22,206 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,420. 6.3% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

When Benning Wentworth granted Cavendish, eight members of the Cavendish family were in parliament or held positions of authority in the British government.
The town probably was named for William Cavendish (1720-64), the fourth Duke of Devonshire, who was one of the most influential peers of the realm.
The other large village in Cavendish is Proctorsville, named for the family whose name also was used for the town of Proctor.
Phineas Gage Memorial, Cavendish, Vermont (546 words)
A memorial plaque to one of America's oddest celebrities is bolted to a rock in the tiny town of Cavendish, VT. It commemorates Phineas P. Gage, who, in 1848, had a 3.5-foot-long metal rod blown into his skull, through his brain, and out of the top of his head.
He was taken to the Cavendish doctor, John Harlow, who plugged the holes in his skull and kept him under observation.
He was honored by Cavendish in 1998 -- the 150th anniversary of his accident -- when the plaque on the rock was unveiled, but as yet there is no annual Gage Days festival in Vermont or anywhere else.
