Cayambe (or Volcán Cayambe) is the name of a volcano located in the Cordillera Oriental, a branch of the EcuadorianAndes. It is located in Pichincha province some 70 km (43 mi) northeast of Quito. Cayambe, which has a permanent snow cap, is a Holocene compound volcano which has not erupted in historical times. At 4,690 m on its south slope is the highest point in the world crossed by the Equator and the only point on the Equator with snow cover (see, for example, Google Earth images). The volcano is located within the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. Cayambe Coca National park is located 75 km to the northeast of Quito, The Cayambevolcano with 5990 meters over sea level, is a unique reserve where you can see condor, pumas, and other animals in an incredible paramo landscape.
Their main mountains are the Cayambe 5 790 meters, Sarahurco 3 485 meters, Puntas 4 425 meters and the Reventador a young and active volcano.
The Cayambe is technically not very difficult to climb, but it is rather dangerous due to the cravesses and avalanches.
