Encyclopedia > Cazenovia, New York

Cazenovia, New York is a community in upstate New York. Located in Madison County, New York, it is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The current population is about 6,500. Established in 1794, the town sits on the edge of Cazenovia Lake.




History

Cazenovia was established in 1794 by John Linklaen, a young Dutch naval officer who purchased the town under the auspices of the Holland Land Company. Some of the first buildings established in Cazenovia are what is now the Presbyterian Church and the company store. The town is named after Theophilus Cazenove, an agent with the land company.
