Before Peniston recorded her first album, she was crowned Miss Black Arizona in 1989. In 1990 she signed to A&M records who already had a great track record thanks to Janet Jackson, in 1992 she released her debut album Finally, which sold over 3 million copies world-wide. Her first single, Finally, achieved #1 chart status on three Billboard charts and has sold multi-platinum world-wide, the single also hit No. 2 in the UK, in the US the album went No. 13 in the US and No. 10 in the UK. We Got A Love Thang was Peniston's 2nd single from the album, it reached No.1 on Billboard's Top Dance Sales Chart, and Top Dance Club Play Chart, as did her 3rd single Keep On Walkin' , both singles were also Top 10 sales hits in the UK, with We Got A Love Thang reaching #1 on the UK R&B chart. She also released the singles Inside That I Cried which peaked at #10 on the Billboard R&B chart, and Crazy Love which hit #31. She won the Billboard Awards for Top Dance Artist and Top New Artist of 1992, a the end of 1993 Finally (the album) was certifed Gold or Platinum in the UK, US, Germany, Spain, Korea, Australia, South Africa and Italy. In 1994, she released her second album "That 'Ya Knew" and the set spawned three #1 dance/club play hits in "I'm In the Mood", "I'm Not Over You" and "Hit By Love." Thanks to the success of these three singles she was named Billboard Magazine's #1 Dance/Club Play artist of 1994.


In 1996, she released her third album "I'm Movin' On" and attempted to move into a more r+b oriented sound and break away from the "dance diva" label. However, the project was not successful with her loyal dance/club fan base and she was dropped from A&M records.


She did make a comeback in early 2001 with the release of her huge club hit "Lifetime To Love" which hit #2 on Billboard's dance/club play chart.
