Celebrity Survivor, also known promotionally as Celebrity Survivor: Vanuatu and Australia's Celebrity Survivor, is an Australian television series currently screening on the Seven Network and based on the popular reality television show Survivor. Episode 00

Original air date: August 10, 2006 - (Sneak Preview)

  • Synopsis:

A two minute sneak-preview video montage of Celebrity Survivor: Vanuatu is broadcast before the second season finale of Lost. Viewers are mainly shown the tough conditions of the experience endured by the contestants, some various challenge footage and the celebrities being disappointed and surprised after expecting the show to be easy on them.

  • Trivia:

The executive producer of Celebrity Survivor is David Mason, who also produced the Australian version of Treasure Island back in the year 2000. Treasure Island was broadcast on the Seven Network. The format of the one-off series preceded the Survivor phenomenon and was an early version of the show (coincidentally, both the U.S. franchise of Survivor and the UK series Shipwrecked began airing at around the same time on the Nine Network and Network Ten, respectively) . Episode 01

Original air date: August 17, 2006 - (Premiere and Marooning)

  • Synopsis:

As the episode begins on Day 1, it can be seen that the opening host monologue made by Dicko, the opening show sequence, and the opening titles are all virtually carbon copies of Survivor: Vanuatu from the U.S. However, viewers see only nine Australian celebrities that are about to be marooned on an island in Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Initially, the group are split along gender lines: the five women (Amber, Fiona, Imogen, Kym and Nicolle) are the Moso tribe (blue), while the four men (David, Elton, Guy and Wayne) are the Kakula tribe (orange). After being taken from the boat by natives to their respective tribe camps, the Moso tribe are shown to be struggling with their new surroundings, while the men at Kakula can be seen to be settling in a little easier. Survivor: Vanuatu Islands of Fire is the ninth installment of the reality hit Survivor. ...

Later on in the day, Justin comes in from the sea aboard a raft to join the Moso tribe, and over at Kakula, Gabrielle becomes the newest orange bandanna-wearing tribemate. Justin's arrival is the help that Moso greatly needs to survive, while Gabrielle is appreciated as the only source of femininity at Kakula. After the hotly contested Reward Challenge on Day 2, there is a downpour at night and both tribes suffer from the cold and wet, in addition to the lack of sleep and food. Meanwhile, Fiona is shown to be the unofficial leader of Moso and is starting to get on some of her tribemates' nerves. The show then cuts to the Immunity Challenge on Day 3, in which the Kakula tribe wins Immunity from Tribal Council (in the form of the Immunity Idol) and a new tribe member - Ben. On return to camp, the men and Gabrielle are educated in what wild plants can be eaten from the ex-SAS officer, who is now an official player in the game. (Note that the Immunity Challenge also included a second reward in addition to Ben: a grill and a plate of sausages, but due to time constraints neither the extra rewards nor the use of them were broadcast. Although, in the executive producer's blog on the official site, which mentions this, David Mason states that we may see footage of the grill being used in the future [2].)

Meanwhile, back over at Moso tribe camp, viewers are led to believe that Imogen, from her poor performances at both challenges, will be the first person to be voted off the show. Fiona and Justin are seen to be colluding over who to vote out at the night's ceremony. However, Kym is revealed to be the victim at the first Tribal Council of Celebrity Survivor. From the footage of this segment, it can be seen that the set of Tribal Council has also been copied from the American version of the show. Kym was voted out of Celebrity Survivor: Vanuatu unanimously on Night 3 (see below for more details). Her charity, Merry Makers Australia, will receive AU$5000.

A race from the beach to the sea and back in order to retrieve items to build a Vanuatu totem pole called a "Tam Tam". Kakula gain an early lead when Imogen slows down Moso in the water; however, the blue tribe catch up when back on land and the puzzle part of the challenge frustrates both tribes. The winners in the end are Kakula and the prize is fishing gear and a large fish, which went to waste because of a storm on the island [2]. • Immunity Challenge:

A muddy pig catching challenge borrowed from Survivor: Vanuatu in which Kakula won again. Their reward was Immunity (in the form of the Immunity Idol, pictured right) from Tribal Council and a brand new tribe member: Ben - a non-celebrity and an ex-SAS officer who has recently returned from consignment in Iraq and will ultimately help them survive out in the wild. It could be questioned whether the challenge was fair as Kakula were already down a member to Moso's six (in which the reward was a new tribemate and Survivor tradition dictates that tribes should all have equal members from the beginning of the game), and the challenge was a physical task which would have favoured the male dominated Kakula. Survivor: Vanuatu Islands of Fire is the ninth installment of the reality hit Survivor. ...

  • Tribal Council:

Kym is voted out 5-1 on Night 3 (she lasted three days). It is not broadcast who Kym votes for, nor is it fully explained as to why Moso voted her out; however, the online video at the official site reveals that Kym has been allowed to vote for herself, which in turn means that she was actually voted out 6-0. This shows us that producers of the series have decided to ignore a rule that is followed through in the U.S. version of the show, which is not allowing the contestants to vote for themselves. This incident coincidentally also occurred in the first episode of Australian Survivor. It is revealed a week later that Kym requested Moso to help vote her out at the last minute, saving Imogen [2]. Australian Survivor was a television series based on the popular American reality show Survivor. ...

  • Trivia

Somehow, the celebrity Survivors believed that the series would be "soft" on them and allow the contestants more creature comforts than would be permitted on usual incarnations of Survivor. They were wrong.
This included Nicolle Dickson later saying in a confessional that when looking for water she was infact looking for a tap.

Episode 02

Original air date: August 24, 2006

  • Synopsis:

The episode begins on Day 4, with Imogen shown being sick to her stomach. The Moso tribe are in bad shape: the five (Amber, Imogen and Justin in particular) are starving and weak and don't feel that they can go on for much longer. Unfortunately, this mood doesn't help the growing rift between Fiona and Imogen, who is trying to persuade the others to vote for Fiona at the next Tribal Council. Meanwhile, over at Kakula, Gabrielle sunbakes while the men of the orange tribe gather food and reshape their shelter. The six are happy, constructive, well fed and believe they are surviving well. At the Reward Challenge later in the day, Dicko - the host - questions Moso about their team morale. Fiona, the self-appointed tribe leader and spokesperson, confidently declares that while Moso may currently be at a physical disadvantage, their hearts are bigger than their opponent's size and strength. Kakula narrowly win the challenge and the reward.

After returning to camp sunburnt and victorious once again, Kakula discuss that they noticed Fiona was cold towards the tribe before the challenge and maintained her behaviour after their display of generosity towards Moso. Over at the blue tribe camp, Fiona's fellow tribe members have noticed the same thing, but Fiona decides to make it glaringly obvious by refusing to eat any fruit, declaring her tribe pride, and making a speech in which she says she is adamant that the tribe can survive on their on without having to receive any "handouts". She notes that she believes Kakula were patronising towards her team.

Later on in Day 4, Fiona and Nicolle decide to do something about Moso's lack of available food (most of the surrounding trees bear unripe fruit). On their exploration into the deeper parts of the jungle around Moso tribe camp, the pair find many fruit and vegetable plants on their trek to solve the tribe's problem. During this time, Fiona decides to lobby for Nicolle's vote for Imogen. Back at camp, Fiona continues to rally the others to go against Imogen. While all this is happening, on the other side of the island, Gabrielle is toughening up at Kakula. Realising that being the only female on an all-male tribe could be a hindrance, she pitches in to help around camp, where the men are hacking up the bed suite to make it more suitable for the tribe's surroundings.

Day 5 soon arrives and so does the Immunity Challenge. This time, it is a memory game and at last, Moso wins their first challenge. Things seem to be coming round for the blue team, who are no longer in dire need of food, now have a higher morale, and finally have a victory under their belt. This doesn't stop Imogen though from saying in her Confessional that she would have liked to have lost the challenge so she could have rid herself of Fiona. Meanwhile, Kakula are stressing over who to vote out at Tribal Council. The original four men, along with Gabrielle, made a pact to stay as five, days earlier and part of the pact was to vote out any newcomers, of which Kakula has one: Ben. Elton, Guy and Wayne spend the afternoon tossing up whether it would be wiser to keep Ben for his physical strength until the merge (if one happens) and to kick out Gabrielle, or to remain true to their pact which was made before the arrival of their sixth member. It is shown that Guy and Wayne, and Elton and Gabrielle seem to be two pairs of allies on the orange tribe, while Ben and David seem to be on the outer.

At the Night 5 Tribal Council, it appears that the votes will be split between Ben and Gabrielle. The footage broadcast also shows that the Survivor ritual of tribes having unlit torches at the beginning of their first Tribal Council (of which are lit when they arrive) has been forgotten for this Australian version. In the discussion with Dicko before the vote, Wayne is reprimanded for not answering the host's question sufficiently, which is an occasion that rarely occurs between contestant and host. In the end, Wayne receives Ben's vote and Ben receives all the rest, as he is voted out 5-1. The official site does not give details about whether Ben has a chosen charity or not.

  • Reward Challenge:

The Day 4 challenge has the contestants transfer coconut milk from coconuts to a bottle, which will be a measure of the amount of juice for each tribe as the competition progresses; however they must negotiate an obstacle course, trying to spill as little liquid as possible. Moso takes a slight early lead, but the more 'clumsy' Kakula tribe eventually win. The tribes were playing for breakfast in bed: a large tropical fruit platter and a custom-made Survivor outdoor bed suite. Luckily, Moso were not disadvantaged in the game as the challenge was not very physical; however, after a close competition, Moso couldn't cut it and Kakula are dominant once again. As Moso are in dire need for food, Dicko asks the orange tribe if they would be willing to share their fruit, of which they gladly oblige. Fiona, however is still on her high horse and refuses to thank Kakula for their generosity.

  • Immunity Challenge:

Immunity is back up for grabs in a simple memory game. Under wicker basket covers on stools in a field are either boards with phrases from Bislama (a form of Pidgin English), the national language of Vanuatu, written on them, or items that correspond to these as their English translation. Tribes have to match the words with their related items. Moso leads in the beginning and Kakula tries their best to catch up, but in the end the blue tribe scores their first win of the series. This challenge is the fourth in a row that has been borrowed from the U.S. franchise of the show.

  • Tribal Council:

Loyalty dominates the ballot at Kakula's first Tribal Council of Celebrity Survivor as the founding members of the tribe band together with Gabrielle to oust the lone non-celebrity. Ben was eliminated in a unanimous 5-1 vote on Night 5 (he lasted three days as he only entered the game on Day 3), in which Wayne received the ex-SAS officer's first and last ever vote.

Episode 03

Original air date: August 31, 2006 - (Tribal Shuffle)

  • Synopsis:

As dawn breaks on the Celebrity Survivor island in Vanuatu, it is Day 6 and Moso's fruit (and main food supply) has been contaminated with fruit flies. Fiona, Moso's unofficial leader, decides to scold the tribe for not showing initiative and working to protect the fruit last night. However, Amber's temper with her has risen as quickly as the sun this morning and Fiona gets put in her place. The two argue as Amber finally stands up to Fiona and confronts her about her excessive bossiness and lack of respect towards the rest of Moso. Feeling ostracised, Fiona goes off alone to have some time to herself from the tribe. She decides to chill out, reflect and get in touch with her spiritual side by bathing nude. Fiona agrees in her Confessional that over the past five days she has been a bit full on. Back at camp, Nicolle praises Amber for her courage. Meanwhile, over at Kakula, despite Ben's departure, the tribe seems happy and productive. They are using the skills that the ex-SAS soldier taught them to improve their lives on the island. Even though group harmony and morale are at a high on the tribe, Gabrielle still feels like the odd one out. Speaking to the camera, she notes that she needs to find her niche soon or else she will seem useless to her tribemates and be voted off next. Tree Mail arrives at both camps and they trek to the Reward Challenge.

Upon arriving at the sand spit, Dicko notices Moso has covered themselves in war paint, which was Amber's idea (not Fiona's, as he had initially thought), and they inform the host that they unified, well-fed and happy. This, however, leads to a surprise: Gabrielle and Justin, being the lone members of their gender on each tribe, will begin a tribal shuffle before the morning's competition. The two will take turns in putting together their new teams, alternating their choices by gender (for example, picking a man from Kakula will mean that the next choice will be a woman from the Moso tribe). Gabrielle gets to choose first and she invites (in order) Guy, Nicolle (after some hesitation), Wayne and Imogen (who is the last female remaining) to be part of the new Kakula, while Justin creates the new Moso by picking Fiona, Elton, Amber and David (who is the last choice) to join him. Moving on to the Reward Challenge, which is hotly contested with great enthusiasm by all, Moso works together to win again and takes home to their jungle camp a new tribal kitchen and a basket of food items.

On their return to Kakula's beach camp, Gabrielle, Guy and Wayne conspire to stay together as the original Kakula, just as Imogen and Nicolle arrive (the newcomers arrived separately - assuming they were given time to pack up their belongings from their previous homes). Imogen reveals the tension is already rising between the group in her Confessional, saying that she heard the three talking about herself and Nicolle just as they landed on the orange tribe's beach. Over at Moso, it isn't any better as Amber, Fiona and Justin make a pact to stay as an alliance, while welcoming David and Elton. The ex-Kakula pair separately note that they think Moso is a little bit nuts after being shown the blue tribe's shrine to a coconut idol (the two new tribe members are actively encouraged to give the Moso mascot offerings for good luck). (In the executive producer's blog on the official site, David Mason states that the coconut god could be a possible remnant from Survivor: Vanuatu - Islands of Fire as Celebrity Survivor has used the same camp locations as the U.S. version's tribes [3].) Meanwhile, David and Fiona get off to a bad start as both don't have much in common, but as David is in a vulnerable position, he takes on the role of Moso head chef at the new tribe kitchen. His strategy to stay wary of Fiona, while working to become an asset to new Moso, is a success with the original Moso members warming to his culinary skills. Survivor: Vanuatu Islands of Fire is the ninth installment of the reality hit Survivor. ...

After the Day 7 Immunity Challenge (in which Kakula was once again victorious), Fiona becomes paranoid and decides to openly take responsibility for Moso's failure at the competition. Later on, after colluding with her fellow original Moso team, Fiona tries to lobby Elton's vote for David, but he has other ideas. Together with David (Justin stays close nearby), they talk to Amber - who is an obvious swing vote. In the end, after leading viewers to believe that the ex-Kakula men were not going to be able to penetrate the original Moso alliance, Fiona is voted out 3-2. The close vote reveals that Amber decided to go against the Moso allegiance, and the culmination of the after effects of the tribal shuffle were also evident in the night's ballot.

  • Reward Challenge:

Day 6 brings sweeping changes to the teams as the tribes are shaken up before the challenge. The tribal shuffle evens out the genders and injects a new energy into Kakula and Moso, potentially leaving some Survivors at risk and unprotected without their alliances, and also causing them to scramble to save themselves. This twist, however, brings a bright enthusiasm into the competition, which is a stomping challenge borrowed from Survivor: All-Stars. The tribes stay fiercely neck-and-neck until Fiona wins it for the blue team. Moso receives as their reward all the items that they had to catapult into their basket (meat, herbs, spices, rice, potatoes etc.) and an outdoor tribal kitchen - complete with plates, bench, utensils and sink. Survivor: All-Stars is the eighth installment of the popular television reality show Survivor. ...

  • Immunity Challenge:

The Immunity Challenge brings the count of challenges borrowed from the U.S. Survivor up to six. This time, it is the prison break challenge from Survivor: Pearl Islands - Panama. Moso gains an early lead in the competition but Kakula manages to catch up and regain the lead, winning their fourth challenge (and second Immunity) of the series. Survivor can mean different things in different contexts. ... Survivor: Pearl Islands is the seventh installment of the popular television reality show Survivor. ...

  • Tribal Council:

Fiona (who lasted six days on the island) is voted out of the new Moso 3-2 on Night 7. Fiona and Justin voted for David, while Amber was the swing vote (who voted with Elton and David) in a tense Tribal Council. When casting his vote for the white witch, David stated: "cooking isn't the only thing I can do". Fiona's nominated charity, Project Aware, will receive AU$5000. Jadis the White Witch is the chief villain of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first published book in C. S. Lewiss Chronicles of Narnia, (the sixth published book was a prequel, and in some modern editions is called the first book of the series). ...

  • Trivia:

Fiona's decision to bathe naked produced the first uncensored Survivor nude scene to be broadcast in Australia (other occurrences have been edited through blurring out). On another note, later, when Dicko is reading the votes, Amber's vote for Fiona appears twice while Elton's vote is not shown.

Episode 04

Original air date: September 07, 2006

  • Synopsis:

The episode begins with Moso returning to their tribe camp on Night 7. It appears that Fiona's departure has had absolutely no effect on the tribe, as they all happily dance around the fire proclaiming Amber as the "Queen of Moso" (and the last female, too) and that they are all better off without the white witch. However, while the morale may be up at Moso, all is not what it seems. Justin reveals in his Confessional that he did have second thoughts as to whether he should turn a blind eye to the knowledge of Amber swinging to the other side to vote out Fiona. Justin says that he even went to warn her but Amber was quite happy to be rid of the former leader of Moso. Later, David and Elton promise Amber that they owe her one and they allude to this by saying that they will not vote for her at the next Tribal Council. Meanwhile, Amber contemplates whether she is vulnerable because of her decision and states that she will now have to wait and see which of her fellow tribe members will uphold their promises to her. As Day 8 dawns on Vanuatu, Justin privately restates his loyalty to Amber (even though he didn't agree with her decision to vote Fiona) and makes it known to her that his allegiance involves watching her back from the two newest Mosos. A boys club is also formed in the blue tribe, with Amber being quite content on being in the outer as she says she would rather not discuss sport 24/7. Jadis the White Witch is the chief villain of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first published book in C. S. Lewiss Chronicles of Narnia, (the sixth published book was a prequel, and in some modern editions is called the first book of the series). ...

Over at Kakula, Nicolle and Imogen bond with Gabrielle, which leaves her in the position as the swing vote should the tribe lose the next Immunity Challenge. This makes the men of the orange tribe worried and paranoid about losing their edge in the group. They believe their position was rightly acquired before the tribal switch and with Gabby now possibly aligning with the ex-Moso women, they talk about how being on the outside is very frustrating for them. If the worst-case scenario occurs, will Gabrielle choose to align herself with Imogen and Nicolle, or will she pledge her allegiance to Guy and Wayne?

Fast forward to the arrival of Tree Mail, the tribes move to participate in the Reward Challenge, which is again lost by a hair as Kakula are once again victorious, championing their fifth challenge out of seven over the series so far. Back at Moso on Night 8, it is noted by David through his Confessional that he is now somewhat of a leader at the blue tribe's beach. Due to the empty void felt in the camp after missing out on bringing home a chicken feed, David attempts to continue providing for his tribe and proving his worth by creating a meal out of the island's hermit crabs. His dish is not much of a success as the politician receives a lukewarm reception from the rest of Moso.

Day 9 comes around and at Kakula, the mood is still funky. The boys are paranoid again today but remain confident that they can make Gabrielle hold on. Over at Moso, the group feel that they have to win the next challenge as they are in dire circumstances. As another storm rolls in, Kakula and Moso travel to the Immunity Challenge. On their return home to the jungle, David feels he is in a very vulnerable position. As a result of Kakula's victory at the day's activities, David has been put into the spotlight as perhaps being the sole cause of Moso's failure. However, even though the ex-Kakula and original Moso appear to be divided and split along tribal lines, David and Elton prefer to keep together to retain their numbers. They decide that they want Justin (who is worried about being at risk of being a target at the tribal ceremony later on, due to Amber's previous actions) for his strength. The ex-Kakula boys also note that Amber has already put herself on the chopping block for reducing her alliance and becoming the sole female of the tribe (and therefore a minority and unpredictable as she could swing to another ally at any time).

Moso treks to meet Dicko as they must vote out yet another from their ranks and it seems that it will be either the politician or the entertainent reporter that will be back with their creature comforts by the end of the night. During the Night 9 Tribal Council, in an answer to Dicko's questions, David mentions that he still feels responsible for aiding the tribe in their loss. This, however, is not enough to save Amber as she is voted from the tribe 3-1.

At the end of Episode 04, a promo for a segment that will feature on The Great Outdoors (a travel show) airs. Dicko will be making an appearance on the September 11 episode to present a behind-the-scenes look at Celebrity Survivor and to "road-test" the tourist resorts and facilities of Vanuatu. (This is not the first time cross promotion of Celebrity Survivor has occurred on the Seven Network - Today Tonight, and the show similar in genre, Lost, have both also featured Celebrity Survivor as part of their broadcasts. • Reward Challenge:

Kakula wins the "mother of all challenges" and takes home a feed, which includes a few live chickens and some lemons. The teams must negotiate a physically demanding obstacle course over land and sea in which the tribes must untangle and free a tribe member who is shackled and tied-up. As the challenge begins, with Imogen and Amber tied up for Kakula and Moso respectively, rain begins to pour down. After yet another neck-and-neck competition, Kakula emerges as the winner.

  • Immunity Challenge:

Kakula are victorious once again as they win another challenge (the tally is 6-2 in favour of the orange tribe). Tribal Immunity is up for grabs again and this time the conditions in which to win it are: two narrow wooden planks are put out at sea and the tribes must stay balanced on them. One contestant must work his or her way from one side to the other carrying a quoit, while trying to get past their other team members, to place it on a hook at the end of the perch. The player carrying the quoit cannot fall into the water or else they must go back to the start. The process repeats itself until a number of quoits reach the other end. A strategy employed in the challenge (which has been borrowed from Survivor: Vanuatu - Islands of Fire) by the celebrity Survivors is to hug each other and use one another for support as they try to get past one another. Kakula gains an early lead in the race to win Immunity but Moso never gets close enough to have a chance at taking the orange tribe out as David uses up most of Moso's time. Nevertheless, Gabrielle, Guy, Nicolle, Imogen and Wayne are yet again saved from the ballot at Tribal Council. The quoit is a brooch popular during Saxon times. ... • Tribal Council:

Night 9 brings another rain storm making Tribal Council an ordeal. A very cold and very wet Moso loses Amber as she is voted out 3-1. David received her final vote before being evicted from Vanuatu - in the voting booth, Amber said, "David, they say never trust a politician. Guess what? I don't!". Her charity, the Australian Red Cross, will receive $AU5000.

Episode 05

Original air date: September 14, 2006

  • Synopsis:

It is Day 10 - almost half-way into the Celebrity Survivor competition and Kakula are five strong, while Moso has been depleted to just three (Amber was voted out of Vanuatu the previous night). Without the safety of a solid alliance and no promised loyalties from the two fellow ex-Kakula members of Moso, Justin is out on his own - but not entirely alone, as the other Survivors will have to endure yet another storm with him. As the rain sets in, Justin comments in his Confessional that when he signed up for Survivor, he thought it would be all about winning challenges and that it was a shame that after all this time he is still yet to be a part of that experience. A little later, David states that it is now very important for Moso to win the next challenge and gain some food or else they will not survive. The mood is just as low at Kakula with Gabrielle shown moping to the camera, but the orange tribe continue to push on as Wayne - somewhat of a leader for the team - goes off in search of food. If the remaining eight contestants will have to continue to struggle being cold, hungry and wet: what will the desperate celebrities be willing to do?

Tree Mail arrives at both camps for the Reward Challenge and it looks and sounds like they are playing for food. On return to the Moso jungle, David, Elton and Justin are elated by their win and get ready to cook their won bounty. Justin is very happy with their domination of Kakula and subsequent claim of the steak reward, but his eagerness seems to stunt his performance - not to mention the weather being temperamental towards him as well - as he tries to light a fire in the dampness. Continuing his strategy of being chef for the blue tribe, David suggests that he cook a stew with the steaks but Elton struggles with this idea as he wants to just eat his red meat. Meanwhile, Kakula is not as content with themselves at their beach as Moso, as Imogen is not happy with the boys' current work ethic. The model is annoyed that Guy and Wayne spend half their time sitting around and talking (when they should be fishing, according to her) but she remains unaware that the two original Kakulas are busy talking strategy behind her back and are equally annoyed with the girls.

Once the Immunity Challenge concludes, the tribes are back to their respective ends of the island. Wayne is both confident that he has the numbers to outlast the ex-Moso girls but at the same time, he feels a little worried and vulnerable about Gabrielle's vote as well. As the sun goes down in the afternoon on Day 11, it is hard to predict which side of the tribe - either the original Kakulas or the ex-Mosos - are more nervous about the nights proceedings, which will depend solely on Gabby's swing vote. In the end, strategy interestingly plays out to make Wayne become the fifth player to bite the dust at Tribal Council and be ousted from the game. Imogen receives two votes but ultimately it is Wayne who misses out on a place in the Jury (he is also arguably the fourth contestant to be taken out in a blindside in the series so far).

  • Reward Challenge:

The challenge was to form a human chain and to throw and pass buckets of water from one person to the next along the line. The first tribe to fill and lower their main bucket from the tower, by transporting enough water from one end of the chain to the other, wins a steak dinner and water-proof ponchos (which are needed in the tribes as rain storms are becoming more and more frequent as the game progresses, which is odd as Vanuatu was going through its dry season - June - when the show was filmed). Moso finally gain the badly needed food they were pining for to add variety to their currently fruit based diet. Gabrielle and Guy sit out for Kakula.

  • Immunity Challenge:

"Play hard, play safe, but play to win" says Dicko as the Immunity Challenge begins. The Day 11 game for Immunity involves contestants carrying small backpacks full of weights on their backs as they run around in circles on the racing track, which is positioned on the beach. The tribes are tied together and the teams must outrun the other as the tribe to catch the other first, and avoid being caught themselves, wins the round. Kakula and Moso begin with three members each and sit one person out in each of the subsequent rounds as the challenge continues. Moso proves to be stronger (possibly after their steak dinner) and beats Kakula after just two rounds. On another note, this is the final tribal competition before the merge next episode and Moso's win brings the final challenge tally to a score of 6-4 (the blue tribe is the latter mention). Episode 06 will herald the start of individual challenges (both Immunity and Reward) on Celebrity Survivor. Gabrielle and Imogen sit out of this Immunity, which violates the rule (that no one contestant is allowed to sit out in two consecutive competitions in a row) that challenges in the Survivor franchises are usually bound by.

  • Tribal Council:

Wayne is voted out of Kakula. The orange tribe blindside him in a 3-2 vote (the ballot came down to being between the former world motorcycle champion and Imogen). His nominated charity, Bear Cottage, will have $AU5000 donated towards their cause. When Dicko is reading the votes, Imogen's vote for Wayne appears twice while Gabby's vote is not shown.

Episode 06

Original air date: September 21, 2006 - (Tribal Merge)

  • Synopsis:
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Guy is voted out by the Tanna tribe at the Night 13 Tribal Council to be the sixth person eliminated from the game and also become the first member of the five person Jury.
Guy is voted out by the Tanna tribe at the Night 13 Tribal Council to be the sixth person eliminated from the game and also become the first member of the five person Jury.

Tree Mail arrives at Kakula early on Day 12 and Nicolle, the first person up this morning, is also the first to check the mailbox. Hurrying back to the orange tribe's fort, Nicolle reads the message out to the rest of the tribe, which reveals that this letter was only sent to Kakula beach and not Moso. The group are instructed that Kakula and Moso are no more as the merge is upon them. The Tree Mail also explains that they have just ten minutes, from the point at which they received and read the mail, to pack all they can before outrigger canoes arrive to take them to the blue tribe's jungle camp on the other side of the island. While Gabrielle, Imogen and Nicolle pack, Guy mentions in his Confessional after being taken aside by the producers, that the merge was unexpected and that time was wasted in the chaos with the four running around like headless chooks. Soon enough, a group of native tribesmen of Vanuatu appear on the horizon and edge closer to Kakula beach in their carved boats. As they arrive on the beach and get out of the water, the tribes people storm the camp and proceed to take the four contestants and their belongings away over to Moso. (The native warriors that "attacked" the celebrity Survivors, who featured in this episode and the preceding ads, are the people indigenous to the island area that Celebrity Survivor was filmed. Due to their fishing spots being out of bounds for a month, their inclusion in the series was made through an agreement in which they leased their land over to the Survivor crew. An event like this that preceded the merge also occurred in Survivor: Vanuatu - Islands of Fire) [4]. Image File history File links Tannatc. ... Image File history File links Tannatc. ... Survivor: Vanuatu Islands of Fire is the ninth installment of the reality hit Survivor. ...

As we move over to Moso, we see that David is the first to spot the crew out on the ocean in their canoes and proceeding this is footage of the three Moso men welcoming former Kakula to their jungle. (The above reference also includes the reason why it was decided by the executive producer of Celebrity Survivor, David Mason, that Kakula would be moving to Moso rather than vice versa or both original tribes instead reassembling in a previously unseen spot and setting up a new place to live. Mason explains that the blue tribe's jungle included a better water source and also, more importantly, a lack of supply in coral on the beach, which was interfering and sometimes upset the audio and sound equipment used at the Kakula side of the island). Meanwhile as the seven remaining Survivors readjust to their new living arrangements, Nicolle ponders her worries in a Confessional, saying that the reunion of David, Elton and Guy (all former original Kakula members) is not a good thing for her game. The tribes are left to live together until the Reward Challenge.

As the contestants and the host reconvene on the sand spit, Dicko officially announces the all important merge having taken place and then discusses it with the players. The group are given a new tribe name - "Tanna" (which means that the celebrity Survivors have not been allowed to name their new tribe themselves, of which has normally been convention in the American editions, but was also left out in Australian Survivor). Dicko then proceeds to hand out new tribal colours, as from now on, viewers will see contestants sport new "watermelon red" (as Dicko puts it) bandannas (or hot pink, as Gabrielle describes them) to represent the tribe formed from the merge. The host also mentions to the group that they have now moved on to the "business end" of the show and the game. Back at camp, following the first Individual Reward Challenge (after ten tribal challenges in the series), a storm ravages the island and the groundsheet from the outdoor bed suite won from the Reward Challenge in Episode 02 (see above) saves "the tribe from being washed away" [5]. Australian Survivor was a television series based on the popular American reality show Survivor. ...

Meanwhile, the seasons are not having as much as an effect on Guy (the winner of the Reward), Elton and Gabrielle (both of whom were nominated by Guy to be brought along to share his prize). The trio are having a feed at a village of native Vanuatu tribes people. While the three have an enormous lunch, the friendly villagers entertain them by indulging the challenge winners with some culture of the island through food and song and dance. Later, after her Reward experience, in speaking to the camera, Gabrielle reveals she is not fazed by Guy's decision to invite her along to the Reward. She notes that she knows the main purpose in bringing her along was to talk strategy, to lobby Gabby's loyalty to the ex-original Kakula alliance and to try and utilise her swing vote to gain a majority in the tribe. The official site stated before this episode went to air that the men would become targets amongst the women of the new tribe in Episode 06, even though they are not outnumbered (there are currently four men and three women in the game, therefore one male will become a swing vote should the Tribal Council ballot go along gender lines). On the other hand, if players revert back to their original alliances, original Moso (Imogen, Justin and Nicolle) will be in the minority to original Kakula contestants David, Elton, Gabrielle and Guy; new Kakula will still be the majority if current tribal lines are a factor in the vote. Countering all this, was the fact that Gabrielle had recently aligned with Imogen and Nicolle and had "disowned" her previous Kakula alliance, which placed her supposed allegiance to the now extinct orange bandanna wearers in turmoil through the eyes of David, Elton and Guy. Moving on to Day 13, the Tanna tribe make a move to get to the first Individual Immunity competition, in which David wins the Immunity Necklace, as hidden allegiances are thrown out the window due to the nature of the challenge (see below). (The Immunity Necklace of Celebrity Survivor is a stylised combination of the Survivor: Vanuatu talisman and the Australian Survivor Individual Immunity. The aforementioned challenge has also been borrowed from the U.S. Survivor franchise, in which the use of it occurs on a regular basis. Players are normally supposed to answer questions and those that answer correctly (therefore alternating the order of play) take it in turns to stop another contestant from remaining in the competition). Survivor: Vanuatu Islands of Fire is the ninth installment of the reality hit Survivor. ... Australian Survivor was a television series based on the popular American reality show Survivor. ...

On return to Tanna beach (which was once Moso tribe camp), it seems any discussion about voting is useless for Elton and Guy, who are definitely in the minority as it appears that Gabby does not want to switch back to the side of the Kakula allegiance. Before the night's Tribal Council, it seems that Elton and Guy are pretty resigned to their fate. The two men separately mention in their Confessionals that they are prepared to go later that night as they are in hopeless positions in the game, which has been indicated to them through the Immunity Challenge. By not being apart of the main ex-original Moso alliance majority (Imogen, Justin and Nicolle with Gabrielle), Elton are Guy are the two main physical threats and ultimately, it will be one of the two contestants (it is not certain whether it is either Elton or Guy that the ex-Mosos refer to when they discuss who they will be targeting later, but it would most likely be the latter) that will be eliminated from the game and the island of Vanuatu. This person will then become the first of a five person Jury who will help decide the winner of Celebrity Survivor. Ultimately, in the end it is indeed the former Iron Man champ Guy that is taken out of the game 5-2.

  • Reward Challenge:

A swimming challenge in which Guy won and he invited Elton and Gabby along with him to experience lunch with a village of Vanuatu tribes people. The first ever Individual Reward Challenge of the series involved races from the beach to the water, as a number of conch shells, pots and weighted crates and treasure chests were placed on the bottom of the ocean. The idea was to grab an item before another contestant did. As there would not be enough items for each Survivor, a player would be eliminated out of each round, with the number items to be able to be collected decreasing with each new race.

  • Immunity Challenge:

David wins the first Individual Immunity of the show. The challenge involved a game where contestants, going out one at a time into the playing field, donated rungs of a ladder to another player's ladder (rungs could not be placed on your own ladder). The first person to have all the rungs of their climbing apparatus complete were allowed to scale their ladder and collect the Immunity Talisman. Tanna decided to award David their rungs (and in doing so, letting him know they wanted to keep him), who was supposedly safe from the Night 13 Tribal Council. This was due to his cooking skills - which means that his strategy is working. The challenge, in which David earned the Immunity Necklace, was designed to expose allegiances amongst the Tanna tribe and it was successful as it was revealed that gender (and therefore original tribal lines) were evident amongst the group.

  • Tribal Council:

Guy is eliminated in a 5-2 vote. Justin aligned with his former original Moso tribe mates, Imogen and Nicolle, who in turn invited Gabrielle to join them in an alliance against the physical powerhouses of the game - Elton and Guy. David decides to go with this group and ditches his former allies. Elton and Guy vote for Nicolle, who Guy says in the voting booth, is the "leader" of the Moso alliance. Guy will return to the next Tribal Council and continue to have input into the show as a member of the Jury. He may not have been victorious in the game but he has still won his charity, Ride Aid Inc, the proceeds of his gameplay - $AU5000. Guy and Elton were targeted at this vote due to their strength being possible a future physical threat.

  • Trivia

David is a keen scuba diver and he most likely downplayed his swimming skills as seen through his performance in the Reward Challenge.

  • Synopsis:

The men come back into power, which in turn forces Tanna to turn on Gabrielle as they begin to see that she isn't being very useful at camp lately. Along with the added threat of her having the position of being able to swing to either side of the fence, this gives reason to the rest of the tribe to consider writing her name down at the next Tribal Council. In addition to this, the second Jury member (and the seventh celebrity Survivor to be evicted from the island) will be decided by the end of this episode.

Episode 10

Original air date: October 19, 2006

  • Synopsis:

Nicolle, Imogen and David are the only Survivors left. David thinks there must be a twist coming, as there are too many days remaining on the island and not enough tribal members. Sure enough, the Jury is brought back to the island to compete in a memory challenge, the prize being to re-enter the competition. Gabby is the first to be eliminated, followed by Elton. Guy and Justin re-join the Tanna tribe.

The dynamic changes as Nicolle and Imogen make peace with Justin and start to question David's loyalty to them. The girls agree with David to vote Guy out; however they start to believe that David may be trying to form an alliance with Guy and Justin. The girls decide they are sick of David trying to control the game, and at tribal council, vote him out. In the end, it is revealed that David never did betray the girls; he voted for Guy.

David was voted out 4-1; his vote went to Guy. He believed the girls were going to vote with him for Guy, and was angry at being betrayed.

Episode 11

Original air date: October 26, 2006

  • Synopsis:

Nicolle and Imogen have an alliance with each other; Guy and Justin have an alliance with each other. None of the four feel safe. After Guy wins immunity, the girls decide to vote for Justin. Justin and Guy decide to vote for Nicolle after deciding that, if it came down to the final two with one of the girls, they would be more likely to win against Imogen. At tribal council there was a split vote, which the Jury resolved by voting off Nicolle.

  • Reward Challenge:
  • Immunity Challenge:

Guy won immunity. The challenge was an endurance test. Contestants had to hold up a pole that supported a platform with a bucket full of water; if they let the pole fall too low, the platform would dip and the bucket empty over them. The last one dry would win immunity. Both girls were eliminated early, at a disadvantage because of their height - the men were able to support the end of the pole on their shoulders or chest. Guy and Justin held out for a long time and eventually began discussing whether they should let their poles go at the same time and see who would win. However during this conversation, Justin either let his pole slip, or mistakenly thought they were going to both let go of their poles.

  • Tribal Council:

Nicolle was voted out. There was a split vote, with Justin and Guy both voting for Nicolle, and Imogen and Nicolle both voting for Justin. Dicko did a back-count of past votes, but Nicolle and Justin had received the same number of votes, so it was left to the jury to decide who should be voted off. David, Gabby and Elton were unanimous in voting for Nicolle. David relished the chance to get revenge on Nicolle for betraying his alliance.

Episode 12

Original air date: November 02, 2006

  • Synopsis:

GUY LEECH WINS CELEBRITY SURVIVOR! Imogen and Nicolle both casted their vote for Justin Melvey to become the first Australian Celebrity Survivor, however, Guy attracted votes from old team mates and friends David and Elton. Gabrielle was a shock vote for Guy to win, as Gabrielle had a friend relationship out of the game with Justin. It seems as though Gabrielle was Offended by the "smart"answer Justin gave to the one question she was allowed to ask. Notice that the original Kakula tribe all voted for Guy while the original Moso members voted for Justin. $100, 000 was donated to Guy's charity of choice.

This episode included two tribal councils. In the first tribal council, Imogen was voted off by Justin, who had won immunity (by default Guy had to vote for Imogen) and chose to take Guy to the final with him. In the final tribal council, the jury members were each allowed to ask one question of Guy or Justin, and then voted for their pick to win Survivor.

  • Reward Challenge:

There was no reward challenge. There was a reward breakfast for the final two on their last morning.

  • Immunity Challenge:

Justin won immunity, and the right to choose who would reach the final two with him. The final immunity challenge was an endurance test. The three contestants had to balance on a floating raft for as long as they could. During the first hour of the challenge, the contestants had to stand on all fours without allowing their hands or feet to lose contact with the raft. Guy was eliminated in this first hour as he shifted his position on the raft. For the second hour, contestants had to stand with two feet and one hand touching the raft. For the third hour, contestants had to stand with one foot and one hand on the raft; Imogen was eliminated within seconds of the third hour beginning as she overbalanced.

  • Tribal Council:

Justin's lone vote eliminated Imogen, while the Jury voted 3-2 in favour of Guy. He walked away with the title of Sole Survivor.

Note that the U.S. franchise does not allow luxury items (which are now semi-phased out of their later series) to be in any way survival related; however, in the Australian version, this rule also seems to have been relaxed (e.g. Imogen's Swiss army knife). The omission of this rule also occurred in Australian Survivor, as Jeff had toilet paper as his luxury item.
