Encyclopedia > Celibate

'''Celibacy''' may refer either to being unmarried or to sexual abstinence. A vow of celibacy is a promise not to enter into marriage. Some writers prefer this usage of "celibacy", while others use it interchangeably as a synonym for abstinence.

The old meaning of this term was "to have sexual intercourse only with one's wife".

The term involuntary celibacy refers to lack of sexual intercourse for reasons other than (voluntary) abstinence, e.g. shyness / love-shyness.

The new celibacy (6041 words)
In certain religions and on some spiritual paths, a person may choose to be celibate for life in order to keep his or her attention on the most elevated levels of knowledge and experience in devotion to God.
Life celibates are usually individuals who are physically, mentally, and socially self-sufficient and who have no real need of other people in order to be happy, even though they may be devoted to helping others.
Since being celibate (whether for a day, a week, a year, or a lifetime) means refraining from sexual activity and since many books on sex have given masturbation the blue ribbon for most terrific orgasms, it is clear that if you want to indulge in celibacy, you don't masturbate.
A Season of Celibacy, Part 2 (1599 words)
When a person is celibate — either for a season or a lifetime — he has the opportunity to offer all the energy and love he would otherwise pour into a romantic relationship to a hurting world.
A celibate season can also be life giving when our willingness to save sexual intimacy for marriage witnesses to the Kingdom of God in our lives.
Committing to be chaste for a celibate season (or to be monogamous within marriage) is a radical statement of belief.
