The cementoenamel junction, frequently abbreviated as the CEJ, is an anatomical landmark identified on a tooth. It is the location where the enamel, which covers the crown of a tooth, and the cementum, which covers the root of a tooth, meet. The border created by these two dental tissues has much significance as it is usually the location where the gingiva attaches to a healthy tooth by fibers called the periodontal ligaments. Types of teeth Molars are used for grinding up foods Carnassials are used for slicing food. ... Tooth enamel is the most highly mineralized and hardest substance of the body [1]. Among enamel, dentin, and cementum, enamel is the dental tissue of a tooth which usually is visible in the mouth and must be supported by underlying dentin. ... The gingiva, or gums, consist of the tissue surrounding the roots of the teeth and covering the jawbone. ...
Active recession of the gingiva reveals the cementoenamel junction in the mouth and is usually a sign of an unhealthy condition.
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the cementoenameljunction of a group of 11 primary sound mandibular incisors extracted for orthodontic reasons.
The types of tissue interrelations were classified in four possible categories: 1) cementum and enamel edge-to-edge, 2) cementum overlapped by enamel, 3) enamel overlapped by cementum, 4) presence of exposed dentin between enamel and cementum.
CONCLUSION: The cementoenameljunction of primary teeth differs from that of permanent teeth, the scarcity of gaps between cementum and enamel, the epithelial junction at the equator of the crown and the globosity of the crown are probable protective factors toward decay susceptibility.
