Centerville is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 762.


The Town of Centerville is in the northwest corner of the Allegany County and was incorporated in 1819. It was formed from the Town of Pike.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.7 km˛ (35.4 mi˛). 91.7 km˛ (35.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.03% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 762 people, 253 households, and 195 families residing in the town. The population density is 8.3/km˛ (21.5/mi˛). There are 402 housing units at an average density of 4.4/km˛ (11.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 95.80% White, 0.13% African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 253 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.38.


In the town the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $28,487, and the median income for a family is $31,058. Males have a median income of $25,208 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,674. 32.8% of the population and 22.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.4% of those under the age of 18 and 31.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

At Pike be took from his feet a pair of new shoes, bartered them for an axe, and pushed on into the wilderness, and in the center of the township near a small stream erected the rudest kind of a hut.
Centerville was not so heavily timbered with pine as were some of the other towns near by, but still there was enough of this valuable wood.

Baldwin, of new Brunswick, New Jersey, and subsequently entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City, from which he was graduated in 1870 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
He then located in Middletown, New York, where he is still actively engaged in the practice of his profession, as a physician and surgeon, and is often called in consultation by his contemporaries.
