Centerville is a town located in Hickman County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,793. It is the county seat of Hickman County6. It is probably best known for being the hometown of country comedienne Minnie Pearl.


Geography

Centerville is located at 35°47'18" North, 87°27'21" West (35.788218, _87.455890)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 km˛ (10.9 mi˛). 28.2 km˛ (10.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,793 people, 1,563 households, and 997 families residing in the town. The population density is 134.5/km˛ (348.4/mi˛). There are 1,688 housing units at an average density of 59.8/km˛ (155.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 93.51% White, 4.77% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,563 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.89.


In the town the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $24,824, and the median income for a family is $35,448. Males have a median income of $29,693 versus $20,688 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,947. 20.7% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.1% of those under the age of 18 and 21.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
