Centerville is a city located in Leon County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 903. It is the county seat of Leon County6.


Geography

Centerville is located at 31°15'23" North, 95°58'46" West (31.256432, _95.979449)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 903 people, 388 households, and 230 families residing in the city. The population density is 240.4/km² (620.9/mi²). There are 464 housing units at an average density of 123.6/km² (319.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.30% White, 21.82% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 388 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% are non-families. 38.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.89.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $25,677, and the median income for a family is $35,278. Males have a median income of $38,125 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,469. 19.1% of the population and 14.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.7% of those under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Centerville (Centreville), the county seat of Leon County, is at the intersection of State highways 7 and 75, Interstate Highway 45, and Farm Road 1119, between two branches of Keechi Creek in central Leon County.
A bank was opened in the community in 1910, and by 1914 Centreville had changed the spelling of its name to Centerville and comprised an estimated 600 inhabitants.
