The Central Daily News (Chinese: 中央日報) is the official newspaper of the Kuomintang and the oldest Chinese language-newspaper still in existence. It began circulation on February 1, 1928, and is scheduled to cease publication on May 31, 2006. Originally issued from Nanjing in mainland China, the paper relocated to Taipei at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. It was once the most popular newspaper in Taiwan during the period of KMT rule, but it lost popularity after the lifting of martial law in 1987 when the paper began to face independent competition and was branded as conservative party propaganda. By April 2006, the paper's accumulated debts exceeded NT$800 million and was sustaining losses of NT$8.44 million each month. As part of new austerity measures implemented by KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou, the KMT Central Standing Committee resolved to cease publication of the paper by the end of May 2006. The Central Daily News (Chinese: 中央日報; pinyin: Zhōngyāng Rìbào) was the official newspaper of the Kuomintang and is one of the world's oldest Chinese-language newspaper having been in circulation for 78 years.
Central Daily News was launched in Shanghai on February 1, 1928 as a mouthpiece of the Kuomintang and began circulation in the Chinese capital Nanjing in mainland China.
As part of new austerity measures implemented by Kuomintang Chairman Ma Ying-jeou, the Central Standing Committee resolved to cease publication of the paper by the end of May 2006.
