Central Falls is a city located in Providence County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,928.


Geography

Central Falls is located at 41°53'24" North, 71°23'33" West (41.889863, -71.392606)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km˛ (1.3 mi˛). 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.20% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,928 people, 6,696 households, and 4,359 families residing in the city. The population density is 6,039.8/km˛ (15,652.0/mi˛). There are 7,270 housing units at an average density of 2,319.8/km˛ (6,011.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 57.16% White, 5.82% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 28.35% from other races, and 7.38% from two or more races. 47.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,696 households out of which 38.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.4% are married couples living together, 21.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.38.


In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $22,628, and the median income for a family is $26,844. Males have a median income of $23,854 versus $18,544 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,825. 29.0% of the population and 25.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 40.8% of those under the age of 18 and 29.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
