CIEFL provides for the study of English and foreign languages and their literatures, organisation of research, training of teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services, to help improve the standards of the teaching of English and Foreign Languages in India. It is the only University in India catering exclusively to the teaching/learning Foreign Languages. The English language is a West Germanic language that originates in England. ...


Over the years, CIEFL has been introducing various foreign languages that are in demand. It currently offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Arabic redirects here. ...


CIEFL was also one among the first institutes in the country to start a cultural studies course with an M.A in that subject. CIEFL offers M.Phil and Ph.D. in this area which blurs the disciplinary lines between Sociology, Film Studies, Anthropology, History, Literature etc. In 2006, a decision was passed by the parliament of India to accord it Central University status. [1] The University has been renamed as the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on August 3, 2007 with Abhai Maurya of the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, as its first Vice-Chancellor.[2]

Three campuses

The CIEFL functions from three campuses across the country.


Hyderabad Campus

The Hyderabad campus is oldest and the main campus of the CIEFL. Established by the Government of India in 1958 as the Central Institute of English,the scope of its activities was expanded in 1972 to include the teaching of major foreign languages such as French, German and Russian. Consequently it was renamed Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages.


The Institute is situated on a 15-hectare site near Osmania University in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, and has its Administrative block, Academic block, Library, Men's hostel, Women's hostel, Health Centre and Staff quarters, all on the campus. The academic programmes of the Institute have been organized into five Schools:

  • School of Distance Education
  • School of English Language Education
  • School of Foreign Languages
  • School of Language Sciences

The campus offers courses leading to M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in a number disciplines including Linguistics, ELT, Literature, Cultural Studies, European Studies and Language Studies.


Lucknow campus

The CIEFL Campus at Lucknow was started in 1979 to provide training to university/college teachers of English from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Ever since its inception, this campus has been actively engaged in conducting refresher courses for university and college teachers, proficiency courses for a wide spectrum of learners and contact programmes for the participants of Post-graduate Certificate in the Teaching of English. In 1989, the Center introduced the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of English. The Lucknow Campus runs a regular two-year M.A.(English) Programme. The syllabus for the course focuses on English and Modern World Literatures, Critical Theories, Translation Studies, English Language Teaching (ELT), and different branches of Linguistics. The campus also runs an M. Phil course in Linguistics and Phonetics.


Shillong campus

The North East Campus of the CIEFL, Shillong was established in November, 1973 to cater to the needs of North-East India. The Centre has initiated teaching and training programmes, workshops, seminars, discussion groups and extension lectures intended to strengthen the teaching of English and foreign languages in North-Eastern region. The Centre has trained more than 3000 persons in English language teaching and in foreign languages. It now offers courses in English, French and German, Post-Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (P.G.D.T.E.), Diploma in Mass Communication and M.A. in English, M.Phil and Ph.D in English. , Shillong (Khasi Shillong) is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the smaller states in India. ...
