As its name indicates, CPW forms the western edge of Central Park. It also forms the eastern boundary of the Upper West Side. It runs 51 blocks from Columbus Circle (at 59th Street, or Central Park South) to Frederick Douglass Circle (at 110th Street, or Cathedral Parkway). South of Columbus Circle, in Midtown, CPW becomes Eighth Avenue. North of Frederick Douglass Circle, in Harlem, it is alternately known as Eighth Avenue or Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Central Park West is the address of many famous residences, including the Dakota (where John Lennon lived with Yoko Ono, who still resides there, and outside of which he was murdered in 1980), the San Remo, the El Dorado, the Beresford, and the Majestic. Most of these housing cooperatives were built around 1930, replacing late 19th century hotels with the same names. Central Park [1] is the largest park in New York (city), forming a vast green swathe of open space in Uptown Manhattan and a district in its own right, neatly separating the Upper East Side from the Upper West Side, whilst lying south of Harlem.

The dispairty is largely semantic, however, since the area from West 100th to 97th Street is comprised of superblocks occupied by a Title I "towers in a park" housing development, and thus exists in more of a "buffer zone" than being smoothly integrated into the neighborhoods to the north or south.
The area went into decline in the 1950's and 1960s, mirroring a general urban deterioration in Manhattan which saw flight from the central city into the surrounding suburbs.
Of the Manhattan Valley population 20.76% are on social security and 23% on public assistance.
