Encyclopedia > Centretown

Centretown is a neighbourhood in Ottawa, Canada. There are no precise definitions. The city defines it as "the area bounded on the north by Gloucester Street and Lisgar Street, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by the Queensway Freeway and on the west by Bronson Avenue." [1] (http://ottawa.ca/city_services/planningzoning/2020/op/vol_2a/3_0_en.shtml) Traditionally it was all of Ottawa west of the Rideau Canal, while Lower Town was everything to the east. For certain purposes, such as the census and real estate listings the downtown core is included in Centre Town as it has few residents. {{Canadian City/Disable Field={{{Disable Motto Link}}}}} Motto: Advance Ottawa/Ottawa en avant City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Location. ... Most of the area consists of single family homes, but there are town houses and a number of low-rise and high-rise apartment buildings. A construction boom which began in the mid-to-late nineties (and which, as of 2005, has not yet ended) has significantly increased the number of both residential and commercial high-rise buildings. Centretown Movies (248 words)
Centretown Movies was Ottawa’s first outdoor film festival, and – perhaps speaking to the success of it – other communities have since followed suit and started their own film festivals.
While the organizers of Centretown Movies have been pleased with the turnout and general reception to the festival over the last seven years, they believe the organization needs new blood to continue.
They would love to see Centretown Movies come back in future years, but feel the organization needs new volunteers with new ideas to make that happen.
Centretown Laundry Coop (343 words)
The Centretown Laundry Co-operative (CLC) was established in 1999 at a time when Federal and Provincial cuts to welfare programs had made things difficult for people with lower incomes living in Ottawa.
Many of the programs aimed at coping with the changes were focused on food and shelter, and neglected the people's needs for belonging, for self-esteem building, and for a community.
A Task Force was established, and the idea for the Laundry Co-op was born.
