Centreville is a city located in St. Clair County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,951.


Geography

Centreville is located at 38°35'4" North, 90°6'14" West (38.584583, -90.103768)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 km˛ (4.3 mi˛). 11.2 km˛ (4.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,951 people, 2,125 households, and 1,476 families residing in the city. The population density is 530.6/km˛ (1,373.3/mi˛). There are 2,363 housing units at an average density of 210.7/km˛ (545.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 3.38% White, 95.46% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,125 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.5% are married couples living together, 35.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.38.


In the city the population is spread out with 33.5% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,500, and the median income for a family is $27,310. Males have a median income of $32,024 versus $23,528 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,150. 34.4% of the population and 28.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 48.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
