Century High School was originally planned to be named "Eleanor Roosevelt High School," but this suggestion proved to be too controversial. It was thus named "Century High School" to avoid any political connotations [citation needed]. The school was completed and opened in 1997, allowing 9th and 10th grade students to attend the school. In subsequent years 11th and 12th grade students were added. In the following years, a cafeteria was constructed and eventually expanded.
