In 1994 the 10 year plan of BC Ferries called for construction of 3 Century class ferries. To date only the Skeena Queen (built 1997) has been constructed. There is some speculation as to why the other two vessels in the class were not built.The obvious reason is that the high speed ferry program consummed all available funds. Others point to the problems with the four Owner selected main propulsion engines that plagued the Skeena Queen following commission, including excessively high noise levels and cylinder counterbore cracking in the high-speed engines. On April 15, 2002 Skeena Queen was removed from service and its four high-speed Mitsubishi S12R diesel engines were replaced with four Mitsubishi medium-speed engines, model S6U. The new engines were provided by Mitsubishi at a never disclosed price. These two ferries were built in separate parts by a variety of different shipbuilders in British Columbia, and they were fully assembled in North Vancouver.

The C-Class ferries are a class of double-ended ferries operated by BC Ferries in the Strait of Georgia in British Columbia, and were all constructed during the 1970s and early 1980s.
These are double ended ferries that have a separate bridge at each end of the ferry and therefore they are not required to turn around during the sailing.
At one time these ferries operated on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route, but limitations placed on their speed when transiting Active Pass (after an accident they were required to operate in the more maneuverable docking mode rather than cruising mode) make it unfeasible to run them on that route anymore.
