Encyclopedia > Ceremony (single)

Ceremony is the first single released by British group New Order. It was released in March 1981 with the catalogue number FAC 33. Two studio versions of the song exist; one has Gillian Gilbert on keyboards, the other was recorded before she joined the group. Both versions were produced by Martin Hannett. "Ceremony" and the b-side "In a Lonely Place" were both originally written by Ian Curtis of Joy Division, although never released by the group. The only time that Joy Division played "Ceremony" was at their last show in May 2nd 1980 at High Hall in Birmingham University. This version can be heard on the LP Still. There is also a version from an April/May '80 rehearsal on the Heart and Soul Box Set (disc 3).

Both "Ceremony" and "In A Lonely Place" appear on the 1987 New Order compilation Substance; the version of "Ceremony" is the one that includes Gillian Gilbert.

"Ceremony" reached #34 on the UK singles chart.

Japanese tea ceremony at AllExperts (5582 words)
The Japanese tea ceremony (cha-no-yu, chadō, or sadō) is a traditional ritual influenced by Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea, or matcha (抹茶), is ceremonially prepared by a skilled practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting.
Tea ceremonies may take place outside (in which case some kind of seating will usually be provided for guests, whether benches or chairs, or even tatami) or inside, either in a tea room or a tea house, but tea ceremonies can be performed nearly anywhere.
In Japan, those who wish to study tea ceremony typically join what is known in Japanese as a "circle," which is a generic term for a group that meets regularly to participate in a given activity.
Ceremony (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (644 words)
The two songs, "Ceremony" and "In a Lonely Place", were written as Joy Division and originally intended to be released as such.
"Ceremony" was released in March 1981 on Factory Records as catalogue number FAC 33.
Fans believe that "Ceremony" is New Order's farewell anthem for a dear friend or close someone, as it was released shortly after Ian Curtis' death and was played at Finsbury Park in 2002 in honor of Dee Dee Ramone.
