Ceres is a town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It was named after the Roman goddess Ceres and has around 40,000 inhabitants. The name is fitting, as the valley in which the town is situated is extremely fertile and is a major producer of South Africa's deciduous fruit. It is the administrative centre of the Witzenberg Local Municipality. Many old Cape Dutch buildings were damaged and some lives were lost.
