Encyclopedia > Cernauti

Chernivtsi (Чернівці, Romanian: Cernăuţi, German: Czernowitz, Polish: Czerniowce, Hungarian: Csernovic, Yiddish: Chernovits) is a city in Northern Bukovina, Ukraine.


History

From 1775, the city was a part of the Austrian province of Bukovina. When Austria-Hungary was dissolved in 1918, the area around Chernivtsi became part of Romania, and this relationship continued until USSR. Since 1991, it is has been part of Ukraine.


Population

The population of the city, as of January 1, 1998, is approximately 295,000 residents. Among these, there are some 172,000 Ukrainians, 46,000 Russians, 29,000 Romanians (divided into 16,000 Romanians and 13,000 Moldavians), 7,000 Poles, and others.


In Romania, the city is considered to have an illustrious history as one of Romania's greatest cultural and educational centres.


In May 1999, Romania opened a consulate general in the town.

The deputies of the regional council in  Cernauti considers that for each Romanian school in the Northern Bukovine (Cernauti Region) an Ukrainian School in Southern Bukovine (Romania) needs to correspond to, and to an hour broadcast in Romanian at the Radio and TV Ukrainian stations – one hour in the Ukrainian language broadcast in Romania.
At the same time, the deputies in Cernauti say that Ukrainians in Romania are "completely deprived" of the information in the Ukrainian language and of the right to study in the maternal language and they cannot listen to a religious service in the Ukrainian language.
The regional council in Cernauti (Local legislative) asked the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to urgently refer to the European and Romanian structures in order to initiate a debate related to "the catastrophic situation of the Ukrainians rights in Romania" and in order to obtain equal rights for the national minorities in both countries.
