Ceti Alpha V to survive after Ceti Alpha VI exploded and sent Ceti Alpha V into a different orbit. After the explosion the planet was covered in dust and the Ceti Eel along with the Augments (Khan and his men)were the only surviving creatures. Ceti Eels incubate their larvae between their protective plates. Upon birth the larve will seek out a larger animal enter it's skull through the ear and wrap itself around the cerebrel cortex. This causes the subgect intense pain and makes them suceptible to suggestion. The larvae may also cause insanity or drive the victim to suicide. Once the larvae finish maturing the host creature dies. The Ceti Eel has green blood. Marla McGivers was killed by one of these creatures while she was in exile on Ceti Alpha V (Marla McGivers was Khan Noonien Singh's wife). 20 of Khan's men were killed in the same fashion. This is on of the reasons that Khan wanted so despretly to destroy Captain James T. Kirk (along with the fact he wanted to show that he was superior to him). When Captain Clark Terell and Commander Pavel Chekov were conducting a close range sensor scan on the planet (they thought it was Ceti Alpha VI) they were captured by Khan. Khan implanted the Ceti Eel Larvae in their ears. Terell later killed himself, but Chekov's worm was removed. To make things worse for Khan's people, the nearby planet of Ceti Alpha VI exploded six months after their arrival, and the shock shifted Ceti Alpha V's orbit, and made the planet nearly uninhabitable.
