A ChaCha Guide is a person who signs up with ChaCha to aid others in finding things through the ChaCha social search engine. Guides are invited by ChaCha to participate. Once invited, a Guide has to watch an initial training video and then answer qualifying questions. Then the ChaCha java desktop application is available for download to the new Guide. The ChaCha system puts Guides through a training session by connecting an experienced "Master" Guide with a new Guide in training. The Master Guide is prompted with the training Guide's keyword and begins asking them questions and providing feedback on how to proceed. In a guided session, the guide and user use an instant messaging interface within the web browser to clarify and communicate about the search and the results the guide is providing. Guides note their areas of expertise or interest, and searches are directed based on these keywords as well as user ratings. The guideless search function is based around the idea that the system will learn from the acquired results through storing the best-rated search results and providing the same results for similar searches in the future. The guide-only area, ChaCha Underground, is used for social interaction and as a forum for questions and information.
