Founded in February 1946 by Gabriel Lisette, a black colonial administrator born in Panama, it at first attracted mainly the country's non-Muslim intellectuals; politically it was much more radical and nationalistic than its main rival, the Muslim-dominated Chadian Democratic Union (UDT). Originally much weaker than the UDT, with the 1956 electoral reforms that expanded the pool of eligible voters, the power started to pass to the Christian and Animist south where the PPT had most of its support. As a result the PPT triumphed in the 1957 elections for the Territorial Assembly, obtaining 32 seats out of 65, 47 with its allies. Gabriel Lisette, first President of the Provisional Government, stepped down in March 1959 so that a Chadian be head of the government and the party, and the choice fell on François Tombalbaye, who had just been made secretary-general of the PPT. The latter leaded the party in the the May 1959 elections, yet another lanslide for the PPT that took 57 seats out of 85. In 1960, a few weeks before independence and the assumption of the presidency, Tombalbaye exiled Lisette, so eliminating a dangerous rival; from that moment nobody dared contest him in the party, that was declared the country's sole legal party in 1962. Tombalbaye renamed his party in 1973, calling it National Movement for the Cultural and Social Revolution, that survived only two years, for in 1975 a coup overthrowed Tombalbaye and abolished his party. Single-party state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (816 words)
A single-party state or one-party system or single-party system is a type of party system and form of government where only a single political party dominates the government and no opposition parties are allowed.
A one-party system should not be confused with a dominant-party system in which an opposition is not officially prohibited, but it is largely ineffective (has no realistic chance of becoming the government), nor should it be confused with a non-partisan democracy which, by the consent of the electorate, prohibits all political parties.
Also, some one-party states may allow non-party members to run for legislative seats, as was the case with Taiwan's Tangwai movement in the 1970s and 1980s.
François (Ngarta) Tombalbaye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (938 words)
A former businessman and union activist, Tombalbaye succeeded Gabriel Lisette as head of the Chadian Progressive Party (PPT), heading Chad's colonial government from 1959.
As a colonial legislator, Tombalbaye had managed to create a coalition of progressive forces from both the north and south of the country, isolating the more conservative Muslim factions in the center.
Progress came to a grinding halt in August 1971, when an attempted coup with links to Libyan leader Moammar Al Qadhafi was uncovered.
