Opened in October 1960, Chadstone Shopping Centre was the first self-contained regional shopping centre in Melbourne, and the largest ever built in Australia. The centre was built and owned by the Myer Emporium. The original shopping centre consisted of a single mall-way with Myer at the southern end and a Coles New World supermarket at the northern end. This end was subsequently redeveloped as a Target department store with Hoyts Cinemas downstairs. In the early 1980s, the Myer Emporium sold the shopping centre to the Gandel Group, which has since managed and developed the complex. A major extension doubled the lettable area in the late 1980s. The Convent of the Good Shepherd was finally demolished to extend the carpark of the complex in this era.

Throughout the 1990s, the complex has undergone numerous developments. These include the development of multi-storey carparks due to the boundaries of the centre being built-up with no further room to expand. Approximately 20% of the original mall structure is left intact.

It remained Australia's largest shopping mall until November 2003, when Chadstone's biggest rival, the Knox City Shopping Centre, underwent large scale redevelopments to achieve a lettable area of 142,244 m², breaking Chadstone's record of 126,980 m² at the time. Another Melbourne shopping centre that rivals Chadstone in lettable area is Fountain Gate Shopping Centre, which has expanded in recent years to 138,163 m². Chadstone is currently (as of August 4, 2007) undertaking a AUD$100 million upgrade of its own, with the Gandel Group extending Chadstone's lettable area to 170,000 m², which will once again make Chadstone the largest shopping centre in Australia. The new extension, dubbed 'Chadstone Place', will feature a Safeway Supermarket, Dick Smith's Warehouse and a Big W Discount Department Store along with an airport-style waiting area bus interchange, a health club and a crèche. The development also includes redesigning the roads leading into Chadstone to allow for better traffic flow into the centre. Construction commenced early 2007. Although the centre was created in the era of the motor vehicle, this fact is now severely limiting the growth of the complex. There are concerns from the City of Stonnington and City of Monash Councils and local residents about the motor vehicle congestion around it as well as competition from local street shopping strips. The nearest trains are at Hughesdale station on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line, which is roughly a 20 minute walk. Also on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line is Oakleigh station, with buses direct to Chadstone. On the Glen Waverly line is the Holmesglen railway station, which is over a kilometre away down the busy Warrigal Road. There are also many bus lines that use the shopping centre as an interchange. Current Projects

Middle Road Project

Middle Road is the carriageway into the centre from Warrigal Road. Work commenced in March 2007 and the aim is to have it completed in late 2007. The road works will be staged, November. Two lanes in and out of the centre will remain open for the duration of the works. The completion of the project will see three lanes in and out of the centre with additional slip lanes into and out of Warrigal Road.

JB HiFi Project

A larger JB HiFi store is being built in the lower level opposite AMF Bowl. These works involve some excavation through to the lower level of the centre and has resulted in one internal road closure outside Borders. The project commenced in February 2007 and has a planned completion date of late 2007. Bus pick up and drop off points as well as a Taxi rank has been maintained and the works will not impact on these services. We have created additional loading zones, disabled and motor bike parking spaces on this side of the centre.

Loop Mall Project

The Loop Mall project commenced in March 2007 and will be completed by the end of 2007. This project will create a new mall for the centre featuring over 40 new retailers. The mall will extend from Kmart and continue in a loop shape re-entering the centre at Toys R Us and the lower level food court. These works will result in a portion of the lower level Kmart car park being closed due to the new mall being built in this location. The travelator entrance in this car park will remain open for the duration of the works and will become a main entry point to the new mall. A pathway will always be maintained from the travelators through to the Kmart entry for the duration of the works.

Car Parking during the works

Chadstone Shopping Centre boasts the largest shopping centre car park in Australia. Currently the centre has over 8000 spaces available. During the project in 2007 only the minimal amount of car spaces will be affected by the works. At the completion of the projects Chadstone Shopping Centres car parking spaces will increase to a total of over 9000 spaces. All disabled parking spaces that have been affected by the construction works have been relocated to adjacent areas in the same vicinity where possible.

Centre access

No external centre access into the centre has been affected by the construction works. All entries remain open. This may change during the project, so please keep checking this page for updates. The Pets Paradise entry is in the process of being re-located. It will move to Toys R Us once the project is completed.

Pedestrian access

Pedestrian access has been affected the Midlothian Street pedestrian access path. We request that pedestrian enter the centre via the Coles entry. The pathway to the ANZ entry is closed for the duration of the JB HiFi project works. This pedestrian access pathway will be reinstated once the construction works are completed in late 2007. All other pedestrian access pathways are currently open to the public. Directional signage has been installed to help guide you through the changed conditions.

Public Transportation during the work

All public transport bus routes continue for the duration of the construction works. The works will not cause disruption to the current schedules and services. Chadstone Shopping Centre is serviced by several bus routes from the surrounding metropolitan area, for further information and bus route schedules and times servicing the centre please visit: www.metlink.com.au or call: 13 1638.
