History

Chaffee County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 10, 1879 out of southern Lake County (although at the time, Lake County was known as Carbonate County, a designation which lasted for only two days). It is known as the Heart of the Rockies. It was named for Jerome Chaffee, Colorado's first United States Senator. Chaffee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Chaffee County is located on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide about 120 miles southwest of Denver in a mountain valley with elevations that range from about 6,900 feet to over 14,000 feet.
Chaffee County has three incorporated towns which include Salida, located in the southern end of the county, Poncha Springs located at the crossroads of Hwy 285 and Hwy 50 and Buena Vista located in the northern end of the county.
Chaffee County is known as the "banana belt" to most Coloradoans because of its relatively mild climate, despite its mountain valley location.
