Las Matras Archelogical Ruins which has archelogic remains of old populations and caves where there is rock writing. It was made department on February 14, 1855. It is found in Chalatenango, the "5th of November" Hydroelectric Dam near the border with Cabañas.


In this department is located the highest point of the country, El Pital with an elevation of 2730.06m
