Chamberlain is a city located in Brule County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,338. It is the county seat of Brule County6. Chamberlain is home to the Akta Lakota Museum, which profiles the live of nomadic Plains Indians.


Geography

Chamberlain is located at 43°48'20" North, 99°19'42" West (43.805548, _99.328444)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.9 km˛ (6.5 mi˛). 16.8 km˛ (6.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,338 people, 942 households, and 550 families residing in the city. The population density is 139.3/km˛ (360.8/mi˛). There are 1,044 housing units at an average density of 62.2/km˛ (161.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 86.83% White, 0.60% African American, 10.18% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 942 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 36.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,487, and the median income for a family is $43,500. Males have a median income of $29,545 versus $22,009 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,018. 12.0% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.9% of those under the age of 18 and 25.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
