The Championnat de France National consists of 20 teams. At the end of the season, after all clubs play a home and away tie against each other, the 3 top teams in the league are promoted to Ligue 2, replaced by the latter's bottom three teams; and the bottom 4 are relegated to the Championnat de France de C.F.A., replaced by their top 4 clubs. After the Ligue 2 clubs are relegated, they are allowed to keep their professional status for 2 seasons, except under exceptional circumstances.
