Chandler is a town located in Warrick County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,094.


Geography

Chandler is located at 38°2'31" North, 87°22'8" West (38.042058, -87.368988)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 km˛ (1.7 mi˛). 4.4 km˛ (1.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,094 people, 1,178 households, and 882 families residing in the town. The population density is 706.9/km˛ (1,831.9/mi˛). There are 1,267 housing units at an average density of 289.5/km˛ (750.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.61% White, 0.36% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,178 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.8 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $36,047, and the median income for a family is $39,500. Males have a median income of $29,074 versus $21,142 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,172. 14.1% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony (329 words)
Chandler is the only city with a holiday tree made out of tumbleweeds, and this year marks the 51st Tumbleweed Tree built in Historic Downtown Chandler.
This unique Chandler tradition began in 1957, when Chandler resident Earl Barnum raised the idea of a tumbleweed tree after he saw a similar one in Indiana built out of cone-shaped chicken wire with pine boughs stuck in the holes.
