The Channel District is an area on the East side of downtown Tampa, Florida. It is bordered by Ybor Channel on the east and Garrison Channel on the south. Notable attractions in this area include the Tampa Port Authority, Florida Aquarium, American Victory Museum, and Channelside entertainment complex.
One of the biggest urban design mistakes the city of Tampa made was to allow a string of multistory office buildings to conceal the downtown riverfront.
Whether by requiring setbacks or certain building designs, the port should ensure the waterfront is preserved, adequate green space is set aside, the development is open visually to the extent possible and that the public has access to a waterfront pedestrian corridor.
The channeldistrict is hot in no small part because of the millions of dollars in tourist attractions, parking, trolley trains and other destination goodies taxpayers have invested there.
Tampa has an opportunity over the next several years to transform its downtown from a business center to an exciting 24/7 urban center - with both business and residential neighborhoods, sparked by many diverse cultural and artistic enterprises.
